Mumbai Customs arrests Delhi businessman for importing 63 heavy cranes using false declarations
A Delhi-based businessman has been arrested by customs authorities in Mumbai for importing 63 heavy cranes in the last two years and falsely declaring them as old machines to reduce customs duty. The accused registered the cranes with the Gujarat Regional Transport Office as new or just a few years old, while declaring them to be more than 10 years old to pay lower duty. Customs officials discovered the fraud through discrepancies in the documents submitted for payment of duty and registration of vehicles with the RTO. The arrested businessman is accused of evading Rs 2 crore in customs duty.
