With recent developments in the field of artificial intelligence, large language models, including GPT and LLaMa, continually demonstrate remarkable performance across a wide spectrum of natural language tasks. These models have proven effective in various fields and have significantly advanced the field of natural language processing. Language models are able to follow instructions from humans and perform different tasks. However, there is a drawback: these models have difficulty with tasks involving table knowledge. Indeed, their main training consists of one-dimensional natural language texts, while tables are two-dimensional structures, which explains this constraint.
To solve this problem, a team of researchers proposed the concept of table-tuning, an innovative way to solve this problem. This method involves further training or optimization of pre-existing language models, such as GPT-3.5 and ChatGPT, using a wide range of tasks related to tables derived from real tables. Improving the ability of these language models to understand and manipulate tables is the primary goal of table tuning.
Table-GPT models, which were generated through table tuning, exhibit improved capabilities in understanding tables. These models consistently outperformed standard GPT-3.5 and ChatGPT on a wide range of table-based tasks. This means they can more accurately interpret and manipulate tabular data. Table-GPT models maintain a high degree of generalizability even though they are specialized to table work. They are able to adapt to new activities involving tables because they can respond effectively to a range of human directives. This flexibility is comparable to ChatGPT’s ability to handle a variety of natural language tasks and the original GPT-3.5.
The main contributions have been summarized as follows.
- Table-tuning paradigm: The table-tuning paradigm was introduced, which involves re-training language models with the express purpose of improving their effectiveness in tasks involving tables. It uses a variety of table-based tasks that are synthesized from real tables using a summarize-then-augment methodology.
- Data augmentation approaches: Data augmentation approaches at the task, table, statement, and completion levels have been developed at different levels. These methods are essential to maintain the generalizability of Table-GPT and avoid overfitting. By adding value to the training set, they strengthen the model.
- Performance in Tabletop Tasks: Out of the box, Table-GPT demonstrates exceptional proficiency in table-based tasks in no-fire and few-shot scenarios. This indicates that the model can perform these tasks quite well, even with little specialized training or examples.
- The adaptability of Table-GPT makes it suitable for use as a table foundation model. When it comes to downstream single task optimizations, such as task-specific fine-tuning and rapid engineering, this may be a better starting point than vanilla GPT. This demonstrates how useful it is for various purposes outside of tabletop work.
In summary, the proposed table tuning paradigm offers a way to overcome the difficulty of teaching language models how to use tables. It improves their understanding of two-dimensional data structures and gives them the tools they need to succeed in a wide range of table-related tasks, both known and unknown.
