Web 3 education and market capitalization have been the biggest contributions of the massively successful Web 3 projects to society. In the pandemic era of crypto-optimism, there used to be a project called Bored Ape Yacht Club (it’s still alive and kicking). This NFT project has been unrivaled in creating a massive wave of adopters of Web 3 technology. Millions of people signed up for MetaMask wallets and began their journey to the land of cryptocurrencies.
The NFT market has launched a wave of technological innovation in many diverse areas, including AI art generation and natural language processing, blockchain protocols and smart contracts, and even hardware. With a lot of media coverage on the topic, people finally started asking, “What is an NFT?” and “What is Web3?” “.
The current state of the Internet is both resilient and fragile. All of these things are in place to mitigate the problem of a server going down due to malicious forces. But they still do it. All of these checks are in place to ensure that customer information is not stolen, but it still is. Companies swear they treat our data securely and ethically, but they don’t. The theme here is that Web 2’s problems stem from the fact that the Internet operates under this centralization paradigm.
Centralization is the problem, or the advantage, where everything goes through one area. In the argument that Web 2 is failing, it makes sense that it’s because hackers know exactly where to aim their attacks. These centralized servers are essentially gold reserves because our information is worth money to them. Not only that, but it’s also a goldmine for businesses themselves; companies also sell our information, but under the guise that it is for *air quotes* to better enrich our lives *end quotes* through advertisements.
This all sounds like a dystopian operating model. But we, the users, enjoy the benefits of speed and ease of use in today’s way. Web3, on the other hand, is gearing up to solve all of these problems natively and Functionland is a great example.
Have you ever run out of storage on your Google One account or iCloud? If you’re like me and record everything, including entire concerts, you quickly run out of storage and have to choose which videos to keep. Functionland’s goal is to ensure that you can have virtually infinite storage, at a lower cost (but don’t quote me on that, I don’t work for them).
In March 2022, Functionland’s successful IndieGoGo campaign brought us the first true manifestation of the “spirit of Web3” (as I like to call it). This startup reached its funding goal in just 5 minutes and funded half a million dollars in two months after opening. The biggest draw has been the decentralization of cloud storage and passive income to owners.
The “Web 3 Spirit” is about aligning your business and product with three core ideas:
- Open source everything and operate transparently and reliably.
- Natively support the pillars of decentralization: security, data ownership, and censorship resistance.
- Bridge the gap between Web2 and Web3 experiences for everyday users.
Most companies find niches in the blockchain space and could never accomplish the third point on their own. But Functionland ticks all three boxes. All of this would be powered by FxBlox devices that 876 original backers will passively host in the comfort of their homes. Some people have purchased several, but everyone will be lucky to own FxBlox. (More information at the end!)
Functionland will bring cutting-edge file sharing protocols with encryption, to store data securely. They created a custom blockchain for Blox orchestration and network security. And they have created open source applications that will form the basis of how everyday users interact with their own data on the network. These apps are still in development, but their mission from the start has been to achieve that “get and go” experience.
All of this work is aimed at creating a future in which we no longer have to combat the mass theft of customer information. Or even companies that unethically peer into our souls and build deeply personal profiles on us. *cough Facebook*
I don’t work for the team, much less I’m involved in their internal meetings. But in my opinion, the way forward is through the integration of developers and content creators. Being able to put devices in the hands of their owners is great, but what will they be able to do with them? The ecosystem will not grow exponentially without the help of third-party applications.

One day in the future, there might be a market for Blox-enabled apps. Next-generation social media sites would respect the privacy of all users by default! Access to your personal data could occur globally and quickly, due to data redundancy, and only you could access it. The central idea of “decentralized cloud storage” applies to all Internet users and aims to disrupt the current way of doing things. Blox’s owners would provide the storage infrastructure, but users would produce the data that needs to be stored somewhere.
The FULA network will be the name of their blockchain. It will serve as an orchestration method for data redundancy, encryption and, of course, consensus. This is an oversimplification, but it will serve as a basis when users interact with Blox-based storage applications. And it will help create an economy where open source developers and content creators are paid for their work.
I firmly believe that “decentralized cloud” could eventually become synonymous with Functionland’s FULA network or “Blox-based storage.” Especially since this appears to be the first real attempt at creating a large-scale, user-owned network. We are at the very beginning of Functionland’s growth, and Blox owners will be greatly compensated in the future for HODL’ing. Developers will serve as a catalyst for innovation on Blox infrastructure if history is to be believed. And Functionland will go to the moon, because they will embody the “spirit of Web3”!
