Expanding mental health support for families affected by heart disease
The Ollie Hinkle Heart Foundation (OHHF), dedicated to helping families of children with lifelong heart conditions, has partnered with LunaJoy Health to improve access to personalized mental health care. This collaboration aims to ensure that families receive timely and effective counseling, education and crisis resources. By combining their expertise, the two organizations will work to make mental health resources more accessible, provide specialized trauma-informed care, and raise awareness through community outreach and education.
The partnership's three key areas of support are improving accessibility, specialized trauma-informed care programs, and community outreach and education. Improved accessibility will ensure that mental health resources are available to families anytime, anywhere. The specialized programs will leverage LunaJoy Health's technology and OHHF's extensive experience supporting 1,700 families affected by congenital heart disease (CHD) each year, providing services such as mental health screenings, individualized therapy sessions and wellness checks. Community outreach efforts will include educational campaigns, peer support groups and localized events to reduce stigma and promote open conversations about mental health within family dynamics.
This initiative addresses the growing need for comprehensive mental health support due to the prevalence of childhood-onset heart disease, which exposes affected families to significant physical and emotional challenges. Frequent hospital visits, invasive procedures, and serious illnesses lead to higher rates of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and ADHD among these families. Utilizing technology from LunaJoy Health, the partnership aims to mitigate risk and collect vital data for informed treatment plans, with LunaCare serving as the foundational infrastructure for OHHF's mental health program. OHHF continues its mission to support families through love, barrier-free access and community building, providing essential resources and advocacy for those living with pediatric heart disease.
“Parents of children with congenital heart defects go through an emotionally destabilizing time. Many struggle with feelings of fear, guilt and overwhelming stress, and the anxiety of knowing that these conditions may be ongoing and permanent,” said Jenn Hinkle, co-founder. “Our providers are specially trained to provide trauma-informed care, helping these families navigate their emotional journey with specialized support. LunaJoy allows us to increase capacity and accelerate treatment time, and we recognize that technology is a critical part of managing a family's evolving mental health state.
