Korok Ray, a Bitcoin researcher and associate professor at the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University, announced plans to launch the Bitcoin Research Institute to drive academic research at the intersection of Bitcoin and artificial intelligence.
At MicroStrategy World: Bitcoin for Business 2024 At this event, Ray highlighted the potential of Bitcoin to enable secure multi-party computing (MPC), giving the example of poker players agreeing on the state of a particular game as a form of computing base.
He expanded this example to include deep neural networks and agent-based reinforcement learning, through which artificially intelligent agents could collectively perform calculations in the context of the Bitcoin blockchain. Ray's vision took note of new developments in the Bitcoin ecosystem such as BITVM, which allows Turing complete computation to be verified off-chain, as in the case of MPC, on Bitcoin.
Ray then offered his thesis, describing Bitcoin and AI combined as “the undiscovered country”:
“The ultimate use case for Bitcoin in, say, a hundred, two hundred or five hundred years, will not be humans, but machines… while we are in (this) wave of massive technological progress, I think the biggest opportunity there will be deep integration between machines and the entire Bitcoin network at different levels.
“The Bitcoin Research Institute is really about bridging these two areas of research and development and bringing Bitcoin together with a lot of major advances in AI,” Ray explained. “There is an army of researchers and teachers, and we need to (bring) the best minds to Bitcoin to make it a reality.”
For other areas of research, Ray noted the potential rise of Chaumin coins as a way to increase Bitcoin payments, as well as the need for secure Bitcoin-enabled prediction markets, an innovation that could lead to products of insurance and financial services more efficient.
Ray's speech also recognized the legacy of academic achievements in computer science that led to the creation of Bitcoin and artificial intelligence, suggesting that both will build on these research successes to drive innovation across all fields. sectors of the economy.
